What Is a Forklift and Why Is It Used?

One of the cornerstones of a successful business is the seamless movement of materials. Receiving raw materials, transporting them along the production line, and moving finished products from the warehouse require speed and precision.

To accomplish these tasks, we offer our customers forklifts. They are one of the most in-demand pieces of warehouse equipment, and they significantly simplify production operations.

A forklift is a powerful, self-propelled vehicle designed primarily to lift heavy loads and move them from one place to another. Its front features two metal forks that slide under the load, lifting it safely.

Forklifts are used in almost every industry that handles heavy loads, including:

  • Logistics Centers for unloading and storing incoming cargo.

  • Warehouses for stacking pallets on high racks, enabling the vertical utilization of space.

  • Manufacturing Plants for supplying production lines with necessary raw materials or moving finished products to packaging or storage areas.

In short, a forklift is used everywhere that requires managing large and heavy loads.

How Does a Forklift Work?

A forklift's effectiveness comes from three key characteristics: power, stability, and maneuverability.

How Does the Forklift Avoid Tipping Over?

The answer lies in physics. The forklift is built on the principle of a lever, similar to a seesaw where a weight on one side is balanced by a counterweight on the other. Following this principle, the back of the machine's body is intentionally weighted. This mass balances the load on the forks and prevents the machine from tipping over.

How Does the Forklift Get the Power to Lift a Load?

The mast—the metal structure at the front of the forklift—is responsible for the vertical movement of the load. The hydraulic system provides the energy needed to move the mast. When the operator increases power from the cabin, a special fluid (oil) begins to move through the hydraulic system. This fluid enters the cylinders (metal pipes) at high pressure, filling them. This process causes the mast and the load to lift up or lower down.

How Does a Forklift Maneuver in Tight Spaces?

Unlike a standard car, a forklift is steered by its rear wheels. This allows it to turn in a very small radius and move easily in confined spaces.

Advantages of a Forklift

A single forklift operator can complete the same amount of work that would otherwise require several employees and a lot more time. It significantly speeds up the processes of loading, unloading, and storing goods. As a result, employees are freed from routine physical labor and can dedicate their time and energy to more important tasks.

Lifting heavy loads by hand is one of the main causes of workplace injuries. A forklift reduces this risk by practically eliminating the danger of back and muscle strain. Additionally, modern models, like those from Toyota, are equipped with active stability systems (SAS) that automatically control the machine's balance and reduce the risk of tipping over.

Making better use of space is one of the biggest benefits of a forklift. The ability to store loads vertically on high racks allows a company to place a much larger volume of products in the same size warehouse. This, in turn, reduces the need for additional storage space, saving financial resources.

Forklift, Stacker, or Pallet Jack?

The terms "pallet jack," "stacker," and "forklift" are often confused. In reality, each of these devices is designed for specific tasks.

A pallet jack is the most basic and simple device. It moves on smooth surfaces and transports pallets horizontally. Its capabilities are limited; it only lifts the load a few centimeters off the floor—just enough to roll it onto a platform. A pallet jack can be used to work in the back of a truck or to move a pallet a short distance from one point to another.

A stacker is an intermediate option between a pallet jack and a forklift. It looks like an electric trolley with a vertical mast added. Unlike a pallet jack, it can lift a load and place it on the second or third level of a rack. Its compact size makes it a good choice for small and medium-sized warehouses with narrow aisles.

A forklift is used to move heavy loads and lift them to heights of several meters. Unlike a stacker or pallet jack, it is designed for both indoor and outdoor work, can handle heavy loads, and is more comfortable and safer for the operator.

Have you heard that each piece of warehouse equipment has a unique purpose and you don't know which one to choose for your tasks? A forklift is recommended when:

  • The weight of the load exceeds 2-2.5 tons.

  • The lifting height is more than 4-5 meters.

  • The work is intensive, involves multiple shifts, or takes place in outdoor conditions and on uneven surfaces.
